Erected at
the site of a coal tipple on Knob Branch Road this plaque reads, “In memory of
the coal miners whose lives were lost during the Weirwood Mine Explosion of
August 6, 1919”. Pictured in the background is a coal company house which has
been occupied since it was built in 1912.
This plaque was placed
through the efforts of a local group to remember those who lost their lives in
this little noted mining disaster. This type of effort by local groups
demonstrates the continued appreciation of the sacrifices made by miners and
their families.
