This
beautiful section of Paint Creek is included in West Virginia Department of
Natural Resources’ catch-and-release area. Because of WV-Division of Natural
Resources’ stocking efforts this section of Paint Creek attracts fishermen from
all over the region and state. Nearby is a proposed 14 mile section of
rail-trail which runs parallel to this secluded section of Paint Creek. There
are 3 existing car parking spots with the potential of 2 more developable
parking sites.
Citizen
groups, such as members of the Lower Paint Creek Watershed Association (LPCWA),
have sponsored cleanups and water monitoring activities. LPCWA has been awarded
West Virginia Watershed Resource Network’s Golden Garbage Can award. This
recognition goes “to the watershed association which has made the best long-term
progress in cleaning up solid waste in their watershed”. Through this type of
action the watershed association has improved the conditions in the surrounding
area, which has encouraged visitation and generally created a “presence” that
promotes the feeling of community ownership.
