The Greencastle community cemetery is located on Lower Paint Creek. Many of the headstones mark the graves of families who lived here before the development of the coal mining industry. Before this time the area was physically and culturally isolated from the industrialized East.

Families still living along Paint Creek tend to these gravesites. Those returning for family and community reunions also join in responsibility of the maintenance of these connections to their family and heritage, retaining their strong connection to place and community.
