Located on
Kanawha County Route 83 across from the West Virginia Turnpike rest area at
Morton, this handicapped accessible fishing pier was erected in 1997 through the
efforts of the Lower Paint Creek Watershed Association (LPCWA). At this fishing
pier LPCWA created a shaded and level multipurpose recreational park area. There
are picnic areas available to the public with barbeques and trash receptacles, a
large pavilion, a circular walking trail and unisex restroom facilities. Fishing
on Paint Creek for trout and bass is available from the pier. Along with fishing
opportunities this area provides prime habitat for bird and butterfly watching.
Residents have joined together with state, local and non-profit agencies to clean up their environment and restore fish and aquatic populations while increasing their economic base from recreational activities. For their efforts LPCWA was awarded West Virginia Watershed Network’s Watershed of the Year Award in 1999 which goes “to the watershed association who has best exemplified outstanding efforts within their watershed”.
